5 things landlords in Nigeria might hide from their tenants

landlords in nigeria

If you have been living in rented properties for quite some time in Nigeria, you know that it can be pretty difficult dealing with some landlords. As most tenants breathe a sigh of relief just because the landlord has agreed to let them in, they do not bother to enquire about many things or do not have the courage to do so as they do not want to offend the landlord. Here are 5 things landlords in Nigeria might hide from their tenants.

Neighbors can create problems for you

No landlord will ever tell you the kind of trouble you can expect from your neighbors in his building. This is because you are likely to run away hearing the treatment these neighbors have meted out to tenants who lived in the apartment you have chosen for yourself.

 Cockroaches can sleep alongside you

Landlords do not like to talk about pest problem with their tenants. They know some prospects will be scared to learn about mice and cockroaches. But you feel helpless when you these crawling enemies finding their way to all corners of the apartment, even your wardrobe. If you hate pest or become afraid seeing them near you, it is better to enquire about their presence before signing the contract.

Landlord makes too many inspections every month

A landlord is well within his right to inspect his property. But this inspection should take place on a monthly basis, especially when he comes along to collect the rent. Many landlords do not tell in advance they would carry out frequent inspections, barging in without caring about the privacy of the tenant.

The tenant before you paid much less rent

No landlord worth his weight in salt ever speaks the truth when it comes to the rent paid by the tenant before you. If he tells you the rent he is going to charge, you have to take him at face value and believe that this figure is only slightly higher than the rent paid by the previous tenant.

I will not carry out repairs

No landlord says he will not get problems fixed quickly. You are told that the problems will be fixed in a day or two, especially when you have paid a visit to finalize the place for yourself. But once you have become a tenant, you learn that you have to literally beg your landlord to get necessary repairs done.
